The BIGBABYGUCCI associate offers another piece of his own universe with Detached. Austin Skinner is a gem who is currently treasured in the underground music scene. I was put on to Austin Skinner’s music for the first time through my colleague Colt Cupit through Die On Top, a collaborative album by the management company D.O.T. MGMT. Since then, I’ve gone back to listen to his development over time and I have become invested in Austin as an artist. He comes with a sound similar to his label head, though propitiously distinct enough to set himself apart from others in his class. Austin Skinner gives us a further look into his sonic world with Detached, going solo on 7 out of 9 songs and appearances from Evn (“link halfway”) and BIGBABYGUCCI (“you said”). This whole project packs a punch while simultaneously showcasing the NOVA native’s continued growth and versatility, which can only be due to his strong work ethic.
He reflects upon the need for space (“Time 2 Breathe”) and false perceptions due to lifestyle changes (“Knew Me”). Right afterwards BIGBABYGUCCI can be heard on “you said”. Then comes “What U Need”, my favorite track on the tape thus far where Austin mulls over attempts to replaced lost love.
“I don’t know about you but I want to go far. I don’t now about them but we’re going to go hard.”
Altogether, Detached is strong, cohesive, easily digestible and full of many different flavors. Check it out today! (P.S. if you’re in the area, pop out at the 1 Night On Acid Tour NYC show tonight! I saw that the doors open at 8pm.)
