“Barbie” is an instant alternative hiphop classic by 17 year-old Je$$e, alongside visuals coming from Cincinnati based media collective Soul Serum. “Barbie” is one of those songs you play once and immediately add to your playlist. There is something about the guitar on the intro that reeled me in right away. Je$$e is a Cleveland Ohio native, there is no doubt that Cleveland is producing a lot of superstars lately.
The video features Je$$e in an altered reality filled with pink Barbie’s. My favorite clips are of Je$$e vibing inside the Barbie house, it gives me a euphoric feeling that evokes memories of playing video games as a kid. Je$$e allows us to take a deeper look into his headspace, when he sings, “I’ma die and go to hell for all the things I’ve wronged”. When listening I was able to connect with Je$$e through his lyrics and it made me feel associated with the track. The song’s melody is easy to get into and is complemented by Je$$e playing his guitar throughout. He is a very talented kid with a real skill for music. I am looking forward to future collabs with Je$$e and Soul Serum.
