The ‘Promised Ascension’ Showcase [RECAP]

There’s an evident shift happening in the music industry – affected by the rise in digital streams, massive major label layoffs, restructurings of platforms, and inflated live event prices, all collectively contributing to fan fatigue in some aspects – that is clearing the way for independent artists to grab the attention of music lovers and connoisseurs alike. On Friday, September 20th, 2024, five emerging Virginia-based acts had a chance to display their talents in front of an audience at The Annex – Norfolk’s new premiere venue. “Promised Ascension” was the name of this event and came courtesy of the new Hip-Hop Blog Novice Principles, in collaboration with the Antidote Agency. It was hosted by Driver with sounds by SoberTheDJ, and featured acts Eras, DUCT, BandUp Gotti, CMRNPRKR, and as the headliner, SHANN. .

The doors opened at 7pm, with the performances scheduled to start at 8pm. We arrived at The Annex shortly after 8pm and upon entering, SoberTheDJ was well into his stimulating set. About half an hour into the event, host Amir Driver – aka “A. Driver” or “Driver”- took the stage to amp the crowd up in support of the upcoming performances and to also share about the historic event and the new venue.

The first artist billed to come forth was Eras. Her set consisted of music that was atmospheric with a laid-back vibe, which really brought us into her airy world of sonics. Next, emcee DUCT blazed the stage with a trumpeter to accompany a passionate delivery of wisdom-filled bars. To follow up, another compelling rapper by the name of BandUp Gotti – who brought out at least 10-15 of his own people to fill the front row – provided a purely powerful and compelling performance.

After BandUp came CMRNPRKR, whose enthralling stage presence commanded the sea of spectators with every word he rapped. Lastly, but furthest from the least, vocalist SHANN stepped up and shut it down with an electric offering of her hit records (also including a cover of “So Into You” by Tamia).
