Singer/songwriter Carly Gibert has a knack for creating worlds with her music, or universes for her music to exist within. Sonically, her style contains pieces of hip-hop, R&B, pop, and soul.
In her most recent output, “WILLOW”, Carly Showcases her lyricism as she raps over a boom-bap beat paired with a synth-backed hook. The first thing you hear when you press play is “I’m not doing shit today”. This line right here lets listeners know that in this song she’s speaking for the introverts, the tired, or the ones who prioritize rest, or even the voluntarily lazy ones. In the first verse, she speaks of her frustration with facades: “Bitch I’m fed up, everything around me is set up”. The hook seems like her answer-in that, well, she’s not doing anything about it-kind of letting things go however they may. And if it causes a little bit of perceived craziness…then it’s okay to whip your hair back and forth like Willow. (Willow, referring to Willow Smith’s 2000’s hit “Whip My Hair”). In the second verse she gets more detailed about her personal presentation due to the feelings expressed. The visuals for “WILLOW” are so enjoyably crafty and cool. Like all of her music videos, its scenes are a peak into the playful yet powerfulness of Gibert’s creative mind.
What fans enjoy about Carly Gibert’s approach to artistry is her attention to detail, authenticity, and her musical range. Personally, I admire the fact that she’s very hands-on with everything she creates, and also her ear for awesome collaborations. The Cambrils, Spain-bred musician has already released two singles this year-”i could be honest” came before this most recent one (and sounds completely different).
