Atlanta’s underground princess has a renewed drive. Anycia, one of the most true-to-herself artists out has carved a lane for female rappers who affirm themselves lyrically with nonchalant deliveries. In 2023, she gifted fans with an EP, EXTRA, then followed up a year later with her debut album, PRINCESS POP THAT. Her persistence has put her on Rolling Loud stages and singer/songwriter Kehlani’s CRASH tour as an opening act, and at rapper Latto’s annual Birthday Bash.
This year, Anycia is back with raw visuals for “No Scrub” and most recently, “BREAK” (produced by another Atlanta emcee Tony Shhnow). The latter premiered via montreality dvd, a subsection of the notable media publication that has became famous for their unique style of journalism. Over the past 5 months, the platform has begun filming run-n-gun videos for artists who they’ve interviewed, those on the come up, and more established independent acts like Anycia. It was directed by Jelani Miller, of Moments L8r (Later), a popular underground media platform that has worked with Tony Shhnow, Levi Carter, 10KDunkin, and more.
“BREAK” debuted on May 20th and includes Anycia matching the energy of Tony’s production with her lyrical content in contrast to her voice. This is what I feel draws listers to her offerings. Although this is not her first release of the year, it gives off a comeback, stepping-on-necks-type of energy and has immense replay value as a single. Hence the track’s title which comes from her opening line, “I took a break for a while and these b*****s, they thought I was done.”
